Inside Airbnb is a mission-driven activist project with the objective to provide data that quantifies the impact of short-term rentals on housing and residential communities, as well as create a platform to support advocacy for policies to protect our cities from the impacts of short-term rentals.

Community Guidelines

Please:

  • Only take the data you need.
  • Do not scrape data from the site, if you would like to subscribe to the data directly, please email data@insideairbnb.com
  • Do not republish the data. We think this site provides the best context for the data.
  • If you are writing data analysis scripts, download the data once, not each time you run your analysis. Instructors, please take note of this when assigning data for a course, and please consider contributing to the project if your course relies on the data.
  • Inside Airbnb data should be attributed and cited appropriately.
  • Consider the mission of the Inside Airbnb project and how your use of the data can contribute to it, how you could give back to the project, or create or contribute to a community organising with the data.
  • Do good with the data.

Free vs Archived Data

The Inside Airbnb Free vs Archived Data Policy is to offer a reasonable amount of free data (the last 12 months) that meets the immediate needs of the audience the project was designed for — housing and community activists and journalists. All other data will be archived and must be requested via an "Archived Data Request".

Archived Data Requests

Requests for archived data will be assessed based on: the amount of data being requested (across time and space); the intended data use; and the identity of the requestor.

Requests for larger amounts of data, historical data, or data for a use outside the project's mission may be refused or asked to pay for the data to help sustain the project.

Where possible, archived data will always be available to housing and community activists, and to journalists.

Visit the Data Request page to request archived data.

New Data Policy

The goal of the Inside Airbnb project is to add more data over time. However, adding data depends on capacity, demand for the data, strategic considerations, and opportunities to pursue the mission.

New Data Requests

Because of the limited resources of the project, in most cases, it is not possible to respond to most requests to add data for new cities or other locations to the project.

The exceptions are requests that could result in meaningful change for residents and communities affected by Airbnb and short-term rentals. In most cases, these requests come from residents, activists or the administrators of cities who are in the process of understanding the impact from, and/or regulating or enforcing illegal short-term rentals.

For other requests, commissioned data requests will be considered, which not only adds data to the project, but also helps to sustain and support the project.

Visit the Data Request page to request data for a new region, or a region you don't see here.
